Workouts in the gymnasium are useful…!

“Exercise daily in God-no spiritual flabbiness, please! Workouts in the gymnasium are useful…” 1 Timothy 4:7-8a, THE MESSAGE

I remember once during a single’s meeting when my insightful pastor was teaching on issue of the challenges to remain pure whilst single.  Somewhere along the way he said something such as “if your body is keeping you awake all night with its hunger to be fed physically, then along with prayer, why not do something physical like go to the gym and subject it to some physical discipline?”

There was uproar of laughter in the auditorium. However, I smiled knowingly because even though I love to keep fit, engaging in all sorts of crazy activities, a percentage of what drives me is the desire to tame / keep the illogically timed cravings of this body under check.  It is not an easy task I tell you, but for the sanity of my soul, I must manifest the victory over the war of the flesh.  I have been known get out of bed at 5:00am to go for a run  or train about three times a day to ‘tire’ myself out due the battle of body and mind.

So does subjecting your body to a physical workout help to suppress the sexual desires of the flesh, for the single person?  The answer is not a straight forward one.  Sometimes it works and its great, you can simple carry on from where you left off and go about your day. However, sometimes it does not and it takes the special grace of God to make it through.

According to opening verse 1Timothy 4:7-8, we are taught that physical exercise is useful, and that alone is encouraging. Why? Because let’s face it, being single and striving to hold on to abstinence vows is tough and so like the saying goes “every little helps”.  Numerous studies have shown also that exercise engages the mind, which means the times you are engaged in physical exercise your mind is engaged at the work at hand and not on other things.

So next time you feel the urge to break your vow of abstinence, why not go for a run, a workout in the gym or some other fitness activity. It is by no means the optimum solution; however, it is useful and beneficial to help fight the constant battle to remain pure for God and for your destined mate.

Keep it moving beautiful people

Much Love,
Remi
